Our day starts most sweetly, trying the traditional bougatsa recipe of Grandma Maria. The route through the picturesque alleys of the city leads us to an old hangout of the city, the “Gyali Kafene”, full of aromas, where we will enjoy our freshly-roasted coffee. From “Gyali Kafene”, we will head to the city’s historic center, where the city’s craftsmen used to be, and we will meet Mr. Dimitris. He will introduce us to the old folk art of silversmithing and tell us the history of silversmithing from the time of the Ottoman Empire. Our next destination is the famous castle of Ioannina. But before we enter the castle, we will visit two of our friends from Metsovo. They have set up their traditional delicatessen shop. They are waiting for us to try the traditional cheeses, cold cuts, and wine that they have been producing for 40 years with their family in the picturesque village of Metsovo. The sequel finds us in the castle, where we will wander the narrow alleys and learn the castle’s history, Ali Pasha and Kyra-Frosini. After a beautiful walk to the castle and its monuments, we will end up in a small restaurant, where we will cook a traditional pie and try the local flavors of Epirus. |
