he argument that Athens has terrible living conditions is very lame. Athens does have many of the problems that big cities have but it also lacks many of the more serious problems that other major cities suffer from. Due to the ever growing afluence of the people of Athens automobile traffic has become an acute problem but that will be greatly eased by the pending grand opening of the new Athens subway system which is due to begin full operation by the 31st of December 1999. At the same time, violent crime is almost non-existent. Athens has the lowest rate of violent crime in Europe. Violence in schools is completely unheard of. Greece has very strict gun laws which helps make school and church shootings as experienced in the U.S., things which are only within the realm of "science fiction". I have been living in Athens for the last 30 years and in my experience it is one of the safest cities in Europe and it's standard of living is well within the acceptable U.S. standards. Good luck and regards from sunny Athens, Tom See also www.greecetravel.com/realestate |
