Nafplio and the Argolis

Nafplion, Greece

Old Nafplio (or Nafplion) is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece. The former capital of the country may remind visitors of the Plaka in Athens, but it's on the sea. With two mountains crowned by medieval fortresses overlooking the town and the small island fortress called the Bourtzi that once protected the harbor, Nafplio is full of restaurants, shops, cafes, beautiful old buildings, hotels of all catagories and a beach that you can walk to in ten minutes. For people who want to visit an island but don't like boats, Nafplio is a good alternative and just a 2 hour drive from Athens. It is also convenient to the important ancient sites of Myceneae, Epidavros, Nemea, Argos and Corinth. Nafplio has a mild winter (they grow oranges here) and is one of the best places to visit in the off-season.

NAFPLIO: BIOGRAPHY OF A GREEK TOWN

Nafplion BookNafplio: Biography of a Greek Town by author Matt Stanley looks at the life of Greece’s first capital from its mythical origins to the present day and the town’s role as one of Greece’s most beautiful and celebrated mainland destinations. Until now, no single-volume story of Nafplio has existed in English, though there are many diffuse online sources looking at various aspects of the town: its architecture, people and monuments. Matt Stanley has researched the book from Greek sources, from a rich photographic and artistic record, from a wealth of primary nineteenth-century written sources and from personal acquaintance with Nafplio as a resident.

The book is intended for a general rather than an academic audience and is a combination of Bill Bryson’s accessible style with elements of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s lyrical appreciation of Greek culture. The author, who is also a novelist, presents the town’s story at novel length (85,000 words) and in thematic chapters (e.g. War, Sea, Pleasures, Heroes) that explore the town’s many facets without feeling like a dry chronology.

Matt Stanley says: “I wanted to create an entertaining biography of Nafplio that brings alive the town’s atmosphere and character. In doing so, I’ve discovered many details and stories that I never knew when I lived there and which will surprise even long-term residents. This is a book for people who want to fully experience the place and its history in an entertaining and thought-provoking way.”
