The spanking new Harry S Truman statue which was donated by Greek-Americans. Controversial from the start it has been blown up numerous times and now has an armed guard. Truman himself did not believe that a foreign leader should have a statue in another country's capital. Greece was the first battle of the Cold War and it was the Truman Doctrine that gave money and weapons to the Greek government to fight the communists after the Second World War. The Greek civil war was even worse. Thousands of leftists were imprisoned, tortured, killed or left the country and the whole period created a lot of bitterness towards the US government. |
